Q: What are SMI's plans for TD Waterhouse investors now that Ameritrade has bought TDW? It looks like Ameritrade may not be that great for mutual fund investing.
A: The TD Waterhouse sweepstakes is finally over, and the winner is Ameritrade. Barring any regulatory problems with the proposed purchase, Ameritrade will be buying TD Waterhouse's American business and merging it into their current operations. It remains to be seen what type of effect this will have on TD Waterhouse account owners. While that may not become clear for the better part of a year, it definitely throws into question what investors can expect in the future from TDW. It's too early in the process to make any changes at this point, because it isn't clear yet which parts of each business will remain the same and which will be modified. For whatever it's worth, my accounts are currently at TDW and I plan to keep them there until I hear the specifics of any changes. As always, we'll keep you posted.
